We purchased the Testors Decal System and utilized it for our Road Runner build. Being able to produce custom decals for your builds has advantages, but at $10.95 for the kit is the price worth it? We believe it is, but we did have a 40% off Hobby Lobby coupon.
The kit comes with a spray bonder and 2 sets of decal paper (1 clear and 1 white). Also included is the CD for the decal making program called Sure Thing Decal Maker: Basic.
The software has pre installed stripes and graphics that you can resize. However, the basic edition does not let you customize anything! When you attempt to customize any of the graphics the software promptly takes you to the Decal Gear website where for an additional $9.95 you can purchase the "standard edition" to do the customization that you thought you just purchased the ability to do.
We did, though, use the GT stripe that came preloaded. For all other decals we simply went on the web, found what we wanted and cut and pasted them to a word document and resized them there.
We printed the graphics we created and then per directions sprayed them with the bonder. We let sit overnight then cut and applied. There was no color fade or smearing of the decal, however you cannot apply to a dark surface as it will wash out all the color. Applying to a white or light colored surface works fine, and this is only for the clear paper. The white paper works good as long as you trim very close to the design.
You can see the decals we created on our Road Runner, note the bird and the GT Stripe. We also made custom guages and engine parts logos, like the Mopar oil filter.
Testors sells the bonder and the paper seperately, that is the best way to purchase if you do not find any value with the free software included.
